I got myself thinking one day, why do we celebrate holidays? A holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities are suspended or reduced. Generally, holidays allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance. Why holidays need to happen? I really enjoy exploring nature with my family and my friends. Holidays commemorate an important event and/or person in the history of a nation. Traditions are an important part to building a strong bond between family, and our community. Celebrations are some of the core aspects of any culture. They give us a sense of belonging and a way to express what is important to us. They connect us to our history and also help us celebrate generations of family. It may be a harvest festival, a religious holiday, or a national observance, or a family wedding. Celebrating your traditions helps keep you grounded in your own culture while adapting to a new one. This is especially important when going through some of the phases of culture shock. It affects many of us in the first months after moving to a different continent or city. One of your traditional holidays can brighten up your mood for weeks. While planning as you become absorbed in preparations for the event and the excitement of the day itself. Celebrating a special day can also help you connect with fellows in your area. This can add to your mutual support group. Traditions should be celebrated most importantly if you have kids growing up in another culture. The good name for which is the third culture kids. It can help them keep one foot firmly rooted in their home culture. This also offers learning experiences that might not otherwise occur. Traditional celebrations are also an excellent opportunity for intercultural exchange and understanding. Both kids and adults learn about other cultures through these celebrations. So next time you see one of your traditional holidays approaching on the calendar do start planning. Invite your friends, involve the kids, and create your own lasting memories.
