With this we come to the end of April 2020 calendar.

I got myself thinking one day, why do we celebrate holidays? … A holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities, especially business or work including school, are suspended or reduced. Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance.

Why holidays need to happen?: I really enjoy exploring nature and I usually have my friends. Holidays are set to commemorate an important event and/or person in the history of a nation. Holiday traditions are an important part to building a strong bond between family, and our community. Traditional celebrations are some of the core aspects of any culture. They give us a sense of belonging and a way to express what is important to us. They connect us to our history and help us celebrate generations of family. It may be a harvest festival, a religious holiday, or a national observance, or a family wedding, our celebrations are woven tightly into our overall cultural identity.

Celebrating your traditions helps keep you grounded in your own culture while adapting to a new one. This is especially important when going through some of the phases of culture shock that affect many of us in the first months after moving to a different continent or city. Celebrating one of your traditional holidays can brighten up your mood for weeks as you become absorbed in preparations for the event and the excitement of the day itself. Celebrating a special day can also help you connect with fellows in your area who can add to your mutual support group.

Traditions should be celebrated most importantly if you have kids growing up in another culture (the good name for which is the third culture kids). It can help them keep one foot firmly rooted in their home culture, while also offering learning experiences that might not otherwise occur.
Traditional celebrations are also an excellent opportunity for intercultural exchange and understanding. Both kids and adults learn about other cultures through these celebrations.

So next time you see one of your traditional holidays approaching on the calendar, start planning. Invite your friends, involve the kids, and create your own lasting memories. Do send your experiences and comments to us so that we keep adding your stories and let the world know about it.
